Patrick goes cheap with a different rooster
Well, I ended up with an interesting combo today. When I was wandering through the local Target, I came across a $4.99 special bottle of wine, which was advertised as a 2005 San Francisco Chronicle Double Gold Medal Winner. This 2005 HRM (His Royal Majesty) Rex-Goliath Merlot looked promising, so I decided to try and put together an affordable meal to be paired with it.
What I bought was a $5.00 Pot Roast (special priced) at the local Lucky’s and roasted it with green beans. Typically, I would have roasted it with a Pot Roast seasoning, but since the wine seemed more of a stand-alone drinking Merlot, I decided to just roast the meat in its own juices. I whipped up a batch of mashed potatoes, which made this a fairly inexpensive, yet affordable meal that was ready in about 20 minutes. The fat content of this typical Roast was just enough and with very little seasoning made this dish a perfect compliment with this particular Merlot, which wasn’t a very strong, but a very smooth Merlot.
In conclusion, I’d have to say it was a good buy for a drinking wine. I wouldn’t think of storing this wine for later or even perhaps pair this Merlot with an extremely fancy meal, as it seemed perfect with the simple flavors of the Roast. Total damage for this meal for two was under $15.00.
